My god, my headline is actually more creative than the ones they have over there today.

Cool! Wingtip vortices coming off the propeller tips.

Gizmodo posted this pic a couple of days ago. I wonder how much of that is down to the scimitar blades.

It is just down to the humidity of the air. Regardless of blade shape there are going to be vortices at the tip and if the humidity is right you'll see vapor trails. The scimitar blades may make it a little more likely since they probably make for a larger pressure difference and more intense vortices, but then again maybe not as they may reduce tip vortices in the name of efficiency.

Will take a better look at this pic on my computer tomorrow. Can't see it big enough on my phone to take a guess. Looks like a Grumman of some sort, but I'm not sure on that. No hints until I come up with a good guess.

It's not the best angle. I'll post another pic if you need it.

Drat, tried to GIS a bigger version of the picture and accidentally got the plane info. The Wikipedia article makes for an interesting read.

I'll be honest, I never would have guessed that one. My first thought was something developed from the Grumman Bearcat and then I moved on to possibly something developed from the Jug. I don't think I would have made it to Martin.

I was researching for my next Planelopnik History post (tomorrow at 11:05 ET, shameless plug) when I stumbled across it. I had never heard of it. I have always known Martin for their bigger planes. I'm always fascinated by these propeller planes that straddle the age of prop and jet, when they were getting all they possibly could out of the older form.

Right, when I think of Martin it is pretty much twin engined light/medium bombers and their flying boats.

The single engine prop planes from that era all have a certain look to them too. I was also considering that it may have been an early version of the A-1 Skyraider.

The Mauler lost out to the Skyradier, which was smaller and just better. As history has shown. Speaking of the Skyraider.....
